We are two weeks out from Christmas, and I thought we’d go back to the Christmas Story. Most Christmas stories begin with Mary, but in truth, the Christmas Story starts way back in the Old Testament, in the very beginning.
In Genesis 1:26, He says, “Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” Note that He doesn’t say “let me”; He says, “let’s us”. Theologians point to this verse as the first verse of the people where Jesus is mentioned. God knew all in the beginning, which is really difficult to fathom, but He knew even when you and I would be created, and what our purpose would be.
There are other references to Jesus throughout the Old Testament called the Messianic Prophecies. There are tons of them, but here are just a few:
Micah 5:2 – ““But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
though you are small among the clans of Judah,
out of you will come for me
one who will be ruler over Israel,
whose origins are from of old,
from ancient times.”
Isaiah 7:14 – “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.”
Isaiah 40:3-5 – “A voice of one calling:
“In the wilderness prepare
the way for the Lord;
make straight in the desert
a highway for our God.
4 Every valley shall be raised up,
every mountain and hill made low;
the rough ground shall become level,
the rugged places a plain.
5 And the glory of the Lord will be revealed,
and all people will see it together.
For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”
Psalm 2:7- “I will proclaim the Lord’s decree:
He said to me, “You are my son;
today I have become your father.”
What is so incredible to be about these are that these are prophets that lived all over, and came years and years before the traditional story of Christmas began. These prophecies are what continued the faith of God’s people. The prophets were able to paint this incredible picture of Jesus, before Jesus was even born on Earth.
Just like the Christmas Story, your story was started in the beginning too. You are special to Him because you are His creation. In this season of Christmas, I would encourage you to remember that you were given birth with a purpose, and He has plans for you just like He had plans for Jesus.
Today, spend some time first praying that God would reveal Himself in your time today. Then, think through the above verses. Do you learn anything new about Jesus in them? How can you apply what they say to your life today?
