Loved…

Every year I pick one word, and hope that God uses it as my focus for the year. I pray through it, and generally know exactly what the word should be by December. However, this year, I really struggled. There were so many areas that I could see where I needed improvement, where God could really do a work.

The more and more I prayed about it, I realized all these areas had a root. It was love. So, without further ado….my word for the year is “Love”.

I realized that in the midst of the struggles and trials God has me in that I’ve started to believe the lie that God doesn’t love me. In my head, I know that’s a lie, but the more I looked at my actions, at my prayers, at my responses and reactions, I realized I was living opposite of that truth.

The truth is that if you are a follower of Christ, you are deeply loved. This is a love that we can’t even grasp or understand as it is beyond any human love. The verse that almost most have heard, “For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

As I read through my concordance and saw this verse pop up I realized just how deeply profound this verse it. Think about the person you love more than anything else in this world…not imagine sacrificing his or her life for someone else, knowing this other person is a mess. That’s exactly what God did. He gave up something precious to Him for our sakes. That is true love.

Today, spend some time thinking or praying through all the ways God loves you, and how that makes you feel. If you are struggling like me, pray through why that might be, and ask Him to reveal that to you.

Have more time? Want to go deeper?

  • In Jeremiah 31:3, the prophet writes, “The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying: ‘I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.” Confess any areas where you struggle to love others. If there are specific people, ask God to change your heart, and pray through ways you can love them more like He loves.
