9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9)
I often try to give off this perception of being strong and courageous. I smile through the painful days, and pretend like I trust God completely when life throws whatever new challenge at me.
Getting at the root of it is that I don’t trust God. I struggle with unbelief. I don’t like His plan. I don’t think He’s near. There’s my confession for the day. You may struggle with this too (I’m hoping I’m not the only one!).
What do we do when this sin rears it’s ugly head?
For me, I know telling myself truth over and over again can help me when those lies pop up. I need to remember that God is near. He is only asking us to take the next step in front of us, not know the whole path.
I also have found that when I ask God to show me how He’s near, He answers. This past week, I was struggling, and He showed me His presence in little ways and big ones. I remember thinking at one point, “It’s impossible that I will be on time for this meeting, but God you are the King of impossible, so show me how you can overcome all.” I know it sounds silly and maybe a little irreverent to challenge God like that, but I did it knowing I needed to see Him moving. He responded by not only clearing out Atlanta traffic in the middle of rush hour, but also letting me hit every green light on the way. I arrived with several minutes to spare.
I know that was all Him – He loves me enough to answer me when I call. Now, He may not answer in a way I would expect or even that I may like, or even be aware of, but He’s always near us.
Today, ask God to still your heart, and pray the Joshua verse over your life or maybe a specific situation or challenge you have today or even in this season. Pray for God to give you the courage, not to glorify us, but to glorify Him. Ask Him to move the Holy Spirit within you to take any steps He is asking of you.
