Today, I went to get my hair cut (from my fabulous friend, Faz, at Joseph and Friends!), and as usual we started to discuss our dogs. They are our children, and like me, she’s so entertained by her little Marco.
One thing she reminded me about today was just how their love never changes for us. She’s right – no matter how late I feed Phoebe, or if I promise her a walk and then something comes us, she loves me no different than if I take her to the dog park and give her new toys. She feels the same about me; that’s unconditional love.
So often, my love is so conditional. I’m not loyal and loving like Phoebe and Marco are. I’m quick to judge, quick to hate, and quick to hold grudges. I’m quick to be selfish, and quick to make it all about me.
One of my favorite (and most convicting) verses is 1 Corinthians 13:4-7:
“Love is patient, Love is kind.
It does not envy. It does not boast.
It is not proud. It is not rude.
It is not self-seeking. It is not easily angered.
It keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth.
It always protects, always trusts, always hopes and always perseveres.”
This is such a good reminder, and I can see that so clearly through Phoebe’s love.
Today, which part of love are you just in awe of? Which one have you forgotten about lately? Rest in His love today, and remember how it is unconditional for you.
Hopefully God will help us all to remember that at some point this week, and be loving as a dog would love.
